A shopkeeper was murdered in a “horrific and frenzied” attack in a shopping precinct by more than 20 armed teenagers, police say.
Mi Gao Huang Chen, 41, was battered to death with a spade, tree branch and metal pipes by the gang, in the Scholes area of Wigan on Saturday night.

17 Teenagers? What the hell is happening in the society today. Everyone of the parents should be held accountable for their kids action. It just beggars belief that something like this could happen in 2005.
Michael Howard’s opportunistic exploitation of British racism is responsible for this death, and all the other violent crimes that happened as consequence of the increase in the said racism that came as consequence of his speeches. This vicious circle is typical, and happened before many times: in Nazi Germany, Bosnia, Kosovo, Darfur, Iraq, etc. Mr. Howard should be very ashamed of himself indeed.
Though I would hardly blame Howard directly for this death, I do find that the racism card has been played far too much my many of the parties, with exception surprisingly by the Labour party.
I would like to think that as an Englishman, we as a country are above racism towards refugees et al. I am all for fair policies towards refugees and asylum seekers but not at the point of being extremist or elitist whilst at the same time as protecting my rights. If I have to give some of my hard earned money/property to help support a legitimate claimant for asylum, then so be it. I could never turn away someone’s cries for help no more than if it were a member of my own family, (though a system of priority would exist obviously). But I will not agree to support those that enter via illegal methods.
And how much did 9/11 increase racist attacks I wonder?
There is no room for racism in this world today, period.
I have to play the devil’s advocate here. I believe that when something happens regardless if they are children or adults you can only blame one person and that is the individual themself. Which leads to the question of nature v. nurture of course…. but I would say that the individual always has the inherent self willpower to override either.
I agree in some respects, but at what age does someone become responsible for their own actions.
I don’t believe you can make a blanket ‘rule’ for each and everyone.
And I would say that for those children to make the decision they did, that they were not mature enough to be responsbile for their own actions.
At the time, rage and adrenalin may have hit the common sense over ride and the sense of right or wrong never entered their mind. But I wonder how many of them who were arrested sat alone in the police cells and cried when they realised what they had done. And how many of them sat in the cells and thought how ‘big’ they were for doing what they had done. The latter will be the ones who in 10 years time after they have been in prison, will be sitting down having matured to the point where they do know right and wrong. But by that time, they will have been either corrupted and hardened by the prison system, or reduced to a wreck of a person having lost the most important time of their life.
Is it not the parents responsibility to provide the main teachings of what is right and what is wrong? Are they not there to guide them away from the wrongs? Peer pressure I am sure played a big part for some of those who took part? So whos fault is it that they were allowed to associate with those peers?
But to answer that, you cannot just lock up your kids, or stop them from going out, if the area and the people around them are the only ones that are there. Do you pin this on the government as well for allowing society to be pulled down to such a degrading level of existance?
Who knows why they did it?
All I know is that it was wrong. All I can do now is teach my kids that it was wrong and hope to god that they stop and think if they ever get in a similar situation.
